How Much Cereal Should I BUY?

Watch our video to find out how we are figuring out
how many boxes of cereal to buy at
tomorrows Post Cereal Sale. Woot Woot FREE CEREAL!!!

Calculate boxes used per week:

Number of Cereal eaters: Monica 4 Cathy 8
x Number of days you eat cereal in a week: Monica 3 Cathy 6
x Number of times a day: Monica 1.5 Cathy 1
=
Your Serving per week
Monica 18 Cathy 48 (Cathy rounded to 54 to compensate for her teenager)

DIVIDE by 6 servings in a box

= number of boxes used per week. Monica 3 Cathy 8

EXPIRES IN 9-10 months (40 WEEKS)

Number of boxes per week(Monica 3 Cathy 8)
times 40 = Monica 120 Cathy 360

- the number you have in your pantry already: Monica 20 Cathy 30
= Monica 100 Cathy 330

Divide this number by 2! Unless you want to only eat Post cereal for breakfast for the next 9 months! Monica 50 Cathy 165

Now you will just have to see if you have enough doubles and coupons for all that cereal. I only have enough for 20 so I will not be getting 50. Or maybe 36 to make an easy 6 transactions.

So there you have it! Remember that if the stock is low SAVE SOME FOR OTHERS!

How to Place an Order

You can probably tell that we are excited about the upcoming Quaker Sale at Albertsons! Cathy has already ordered 100 coupons. Not all for herself mind you she is going to share with others. Hopefully with me too. ;)

Did you do the math on that? 100 coupons= 200 boxes of granola bars. That's alot of granola bars!!! So how will we make sure that we get the granola bars we need and still save plenty for all of our friends?
PLACE AN ORDER!!!

How do you place an order?

1. Figure out how much you want. You need to consider a few things to make this decision.
  • There are two big Quaker sales each year. One in January and one in September. There will be several small sales in between.
  • How many people in your family eat the product.
  • How quickly your family goes through a box.
  • How many coupons you have.
  • How much you can spend from your monthly grocery budget.
  • EXPIRATION DATES, you do not want to stock up on granola bars for 8 months that will expire in 4 months.
2. Decide which variety you want.
  • Look at the ad in this post to see what is included
  • Go to your store and look to see which variety are your favorite. If you don't already know.
  • Example: Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, variety pack. It stinks to have to settle for fat free, or no sugar if that is not what you were looking for.
3. Go to or call customer service and ask to make an order with the grocery manager.
  • Be sure to do this towards the begining of the sale so it will have time to arrive.
  • They will call you when it arrives, or tell you when they expect the shipment.
  • If you want a few of this and a few of that you are better off getting a raincheck or simply shopping the first day of the sale.

4. If you don't get to making an order and your store runs out of what you want GET A RAINCHECK!!!!!

4 Steps to Becoming the Master of Your Stockpile

So what is the whole point of this coupon thing anyway?
Is it just for kicks and giggles?

NO WAY! We are here to teach you how to save money...
by using coupons, waiting for the super fab sale, and stocking up! WHY?

So you can SHOP FROM YOUR PANTRY! You know, your pantry, that place chock full of food you've been purchasing? Hopefully you've been stocking up (aka: NOT hoarding) when yo
u find an item at a rock bottom price!

Are you using all of those food items you buy???

I have to admit sometimes I forget about some of the food I buy and it sits in the pantry until expiration (guess what, I did this before I started couponing too).

So, let's answer that question:

"Exactly how DO you menu plan from your pantry?"

STEP 1 - MAKE A LIST

What are the top 20 items you use most frequently from your pantry? Look through your cupboards and closets. What do you have in there? What are you always running out of? Maybe look at your recipes to see what you need the most of.

STEP 2 - DECIDE ON YOUR PERSONAL PRICE POINT

Since these are the items you are using the most, these are the things you want to pay rock bottom prices on. Now, of course, some items you just won't be able to get on coupon. That's OK - because you're saving $ on a whole lot of other items! Feel free to use our personal price point list. We also always try to let you know when we're stocking up on something. Keep in mind, when it's SUPER exciting for us, we always place a special order with our stores manager.

STEP 3 - ACQUIRE COUPONS
You can't stock up at rock bottom prices if you don't have a coupon for every single item you purchase. That is why I am personally getting 6 copies of the Sunday paper. When there is something I REALLY want a lot of, I'll go purchase coupons on eBay.

STEP 4 - STOCK UP!

When the item is on sale (a GOOD sale), that is when it's time to stock up! PLEASE, don't feel that this means you can go in and clear the shelves at every store near you. When it's something we use all the time (like Prego), we place an order with the manager. This way they order EXTRA for us and we don't have to worry about taking product off the shelves. I like to get a 3-12 month supply. Keep in mind EXPIRATION DATES! Don't get it if you can't use it before it expires!

Here are a few items on my top 20 list:

Cream of Chicken Soup
Spaghetti Sauce
Pasta
Butter (you can freeze this you know!)
Cheese (look at the expiration dates... they last a long time as long as they are sealed. You can also shred and freeze.)
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts (we stock up when they are $1.79/lb or less - see this post for ideas of what we do with a lot of cheap chicken!)
Veggies (frozen or canned)
Salad Dressing
BBQ Sauce
Brownie Mix (a staple in my husbands diet)
Mayonnaise
Chocolate Chips (again, a staple in my husbands diet)

Now you've got the stuff, what do you do???

Da-da-Daaah!

The Fab FruGAL's are here to help!

Each week we'll post recipes that will use many ingredients from recent sales and your stockpile! You will find each weeks list under "Shop From Your Pantry".

What is your #1 can't live with out gotta have it always running out of pantry item?!

Make $ While Shopping Online!

Many of you are aware that I had my (gulp) 7th child 6 weeks ago. Needless to say, I'm not getting out much. Especially when it comes to Christmas shopping!

Others of you are thinking there is no way you are wanting to go with THIS kind of stuff!! (aka: pix on the left)

Today I have compiled my best tips for shopping online. It's something I've been doing for years, and it's so easy and so fun!!

I've always purchased things online here and there. Years ago I opened Pay Pal for super easy online purchasing. I love it!! It's super secure and convenient!

More recently, I've been earning Amazon Gift Cards by simply searching the web via SwagBucks. Easiest $ I've ever earned! Not sure what SwagBucks is? Read my post explaining why it is the coolest thing since sliced bread!

And about a year ago, I joined Ebates. What is Ebates??? Just think of it as your "portal" to online shopping. When shopping online, Ebates members merely stop at Ebates first, look up the store they want to purchase something from, see if there are any coupon codes, and click on the link found at Ebates. Not only do Ebates members save $ because they find online coupon codes they may have not known of, they ALSO get CASH BACK from a percentage of their purchase (anywhere from 1-10%!)! Every quarter, Ebates will give you your MOOLAH - they even let you chose how to get your $. They'll send you a check, make a deposit in your PayPal account, or donate to a charity or family member in your name! I LOVE having OPTIONS!!!

Things I've purchase and received cash back from Ebates on:
  • Airline Tickets
  • Christmas Cards through Vista Print
  • Electronics purchased from Walmart.com
  • Christmas gifts I purchased online last year.
  • And more stuff, I can't even remember!!!
They have over 1200 stores that you can earn rebates through... not to mention all the great coupon codes they have! If you shop online, you're losing money if you don't go through Ebates!

Right now, you can get a $5 SIGN ON BONUS (if you don't make at least a $20 purchase in the first 90 days, you'll lose your $5 bonus. But I'm sure you will with Christmas right around the corner!) Just sign up through our link and make an instant $5!

So THAT is how I save (and EARN) money when I shop online! Hope you find it useful!!! (On Black Friday, you won't find me out with all the craziness - you'll find me at home, kickin back in my robe and slippers with my cup of hot Cocoa, shopping (and making $) online!

Fabuless Coupon Tip Tuesday: Trouble Printing?

Before we can help with printing problems we want to be sure you know some lingo.........

Bricks: Partner with coupons.com that has coupons usually available after signing up for something. But not always.

A "bricks page" will look like the image to the left.

IE: Internet Explorer Browser

FF: FireFox Browser

The URL will look similar to this:

Bricks coupons have a link that is meant to be printed in a certain browser (i.e. Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari).

When you try to print a coupon in a different browser than was intended, you will get a message the says, "trying to download coupon printer."

You can cut and paste this link to another browser. If you have two browsers on your computer.
Or simply change two characters in the link.

Here is part of a Firefox link:
http://bricks.coupons.com/Start.asp?tqnm=ri3peuo59687503&bt=wg&o=53740&ci=1&c=GM&p=TyQrvJAY

Note the “wg” in the URL. That means it is a Firefox link.

To make the link an Internet Explorer link: change the “wg” to “wi” or “vi”. If one does not work try the other.

Here is part of an Internet Explorer link:
http://bricks.coupons.com/Start.asp?tqnm=qhldcyo15421561&bt=vi&o=55267&pt=&lang
Note the “vi” in the URL. That means it is an Internet Explorer link

To make link a Firefox link: change the “wi” or “vi” to “wg”. If one does not work try the other.

If you use Safari: replace the “wg”, “wi”, or “vi” to “xs”. And to get a Safari link to print in a different browser, change the “xs” to“wi” or “vi” for Internet Explorer or to “wg” for Firefox.

Albertsons Double Deals 11/8-11/10

You will find DOUBLES
in your Sunday Paper!
Yippee!!

So what to do
with all those
DOUBLES??!?!

First a little
"Twice The Value"
(aka: Doublers/Doubles)
101

What are they?

You can use THREE "Doubles" per transaction. This will allow you to double three of your coupons. The coupons must be $1.00 in value or less.

Where can I find them?

When we have them (and it seems that we get them nearly every week), they will either come out with the Wednesday ad (in the newspaper and TMC), or more commonly, they are in the Sunday paper. Most often in a slick one page advertisement as shown above, but we have also seen them in the actual print section of the newspaper, and one time they were in with the coupon inserts!

You will also be able to go to customer service in your store and request an ad that contains the doublers. 99.9% of the time, they will only give you one ad (which contains three doubles). So if you want to do multiple transactions (the most effective way to build your stockpile), you'll need to make multiple shopping trips. This is why we strongly suggest getting a Newspaper Subscription where you receive multiple copies of the coupons and ads. In just one Sunday, you'll pay for your subscription with the value of all the sets of doubles you'll receive!

Sometimes the doubles come in the Wednesday ad and last the entire week. When this happens, we usually have some readers who have connections to the TMC and willingly share the extra doubles they end up with!

When Can I Use Them?

When they are in the Wednesday paper, they are valid for the entire sale week (Wed-Tues). When they are in the Sunday paper, they are valid for the last three days of the sale (Sun-Tues). Usually, when it is a fab sale, we will do three transactions in a row. We will use one set (a "set"contains 3 doubles) per transaction, and almost always do three transactions in a row! Many of the stores are "cracking down" and not letting you double the coupons that say "Do Not Double". So be aware of this as you are planning your shopping trip. (I'm not going to waste a whole paragraph explaining why I think this is silly, since it is ALBERTSONS that is paying for the value of the "double", not the manufacturer).

What is the best way to use them?
To get the most bang for your buck, double the ones valued at $1.00! But do be aware that there may be times the cashier will adjust the value of the double down. This would be the case if you were to purchase a box of crackers that was on sale for $1.75. If you doubled a $1/1 coupon, you would be "making" $.25 off the product. While you would always have other items that would absorb the cost, many cashiers will just adjust the coupon down to $.75 so you would get the crackers FREE (still not bad!) vs. getting paid to buy the crackers.

Sometimes I'll just get enough items to maximize my doubles. This is when I leave the store paying $2 or less for a number of items.

Other times, I'll use them in conjunction with a promo. When doing this, I'll just make sure I have three "$1.00 off" coupons to double and then I'll plan on my total out of pocket being an additional $3.00 less.

So here are a few items
that you can get
FREE OR SUPER CHEAP
when doubling your coupons.

Fabulous Coupon Tip Tuesday: Walgreens 101

Walgreens 101

Stacking Coupons: You can use a Walgreens store coupon and a manufactures coupon on the same item.
Example:
Buy four cans of Campbell's Soup
Use one Walgreens in-ad coupon to make the soup 0.59 also
Use one .40 off 4 manufactures coupon.
Final Cost 0.49 each

Where do I get the Walgreen's Coupons?
Walgreens coupons can be found in the store ad. Find your store ad in the Sunday paper and at the store. The coupons are only good for 7 days, Sunday-Saturday to go along with the stores weekly sales.

What if they are out of my coupon item?
If the store is out of an item you can get a raincheck for the price on your in-store coupon. Just ask a manager. Keep the coupon with the raincheck in case there is confusion when you go to redeem it later.

What are Register Rewards (RR)?

Register Rewards are dollar value coupons (pictured above) received for buying certain promotional items at Walgreen's. They print out after you have paid for your purchase. They act as in store cash and can be redeemed like cash on future Walgreen's purchases.

Look for this wave symbol in the ad or in the store to find Register Reward items. We look for register reward items that have coupon match-ups in order to make the item cheap, free or even have overage.

Example:
Nivea Body Wash 16.9 oz $4.99
Use $1/1 Manufactures coupon (MC)
Receive $5RR
Final Cost $1 OVERAGE

Overage When the combination of an RR and MC exceed the value of the item purchased.
Sometimes the RR offer has no coupon match-ups and is not free after RR. Not all RR deals are good ones, but many are.

Golden Rules:

1. You will only get one RR per transaction in a certain promotion.

Example:

Nivea body wash has an RR promotion. If you buy 2 Nivea body washes you will only get one RR. If you buy Nivea and Rembrandt toothpaste you will get an RR for each product as long as they are part of different promotions.

Rolling RR's: This is how you get more than one bottle of Nivea during the promotion with out having to pay cash.

Buy the Nivea get a $5 RR
Buy the Rembrandt pay $1 cash and $5 RR get $6 RR
Buy Nivea and a $1 item to get your subtotal to $6, pay with $6 RR
Get another $5 RR and on and on til you have what you need!

Sometimes they will do a group a products together like several varieties of Tylenol seen here. If you buy the 2 Children's Tylenol and 2 Tylenol Allergy you will only get one RR. This is because they are in the same promotion!

2. You can not roll Register Rewards within the same promotion (usually)
Wait I just showed you how to roll RR's. You have to alternate promotions. If you tried to buy another Nivea with the $5 Nivea RR your next RR would not print!

3. You can not have more manufactures coupons than items
Register Rewards count as a manufactures coupon. (MC)
Example:
Buy
Nivea Use $1 off MC
and
Rembrandt Use $1 off MC
Let's say you want to use your $3 RR from Tylenol you will have to buy a pencil or small piece of candy (filler item) to match with the RR.
If you had store coupons to match with each product you could you those as well.

4. There is an order to give the coupons that seems to work best!
1. Register Reward
2. Manufacturer
3. Store

How to Leave a Comment

Tonight I met our reader Caitlin who had a great tip, but didn't have a "google account" to leave a comment, and she wasn't sure how to set one up so she COULD leave a comment!

I've heard this from class attendees as well (and just got an email from another reader with the same comment!), so I thought today was a fabulous day to teach some of you HOW to do this!

And guess what??? You DO NOT have to make a new google email address (although, gmail is so stinkin cool, you really should consider it!) in order to set up a google account!

SO - Let's say you read a post and have your own fabulous tip to add to it. First thing you're going to do is look at the bottom of the post for this:

If you just click on those words (sometimes it says 1 Comment, 7 comments...) a new box will pop up that will look like this:

Now here it is telling me to enter my username and password for a Google Account. In my prebogging days, that is where I stopped. I didn't want to open some new account!

But it's easy peasy! I'm going to show you what to do.

  1. Click on "Sign Up Here" as shown in the window above.

  2. First thing you'll do is input your existing email address (msn, yahoo, hotmail, all of those will work for this!) - they'll have you enter it twice.

  3. Then create a password. This is for your "google account". It is linked to the email you enter. You are NOT making a new email account.

  4. Pick a "display name". This is what people will see next to your comment... some people do something fun (aka: Hiccups) or just their first name. I don't recommend using your full name for this though.

  5. Click (or unclick) the "email notifications" box.

  6. Then you'll have to do the whole word verification thing. These are annoying I know. And a lot of times I can't even tell what the letters are! If you get it wrong, they'll just put a new set of letters up, so don't worry about it. Eventually you'll get one that you can actually read!

  7. Click on the box to accept the terms of service and then click on "continue".

  8. The next thing that will happen, it will take you to the comment form! And there you can tell us all what you want to say, and you'll see your nice little display name!

  9. Also, you can click on the option to have follow-up comments emailed to you, which is sometimes a nice little feature!

  10. Then just click "Publish Your Comment" and there you go!

At this point, you'll see your comment with your name right above it. If you click on your name, you'll see your own profile. Since you are still logged in, you can click on the box "edit profile" and from here you have a lot of things you can do if you wish. For example, you can upload a picture, change your user name, or make your profile private if you wish.

So there you have it! Now you can share your ideas, tips, and great finds super duper easily!

If this still doesn't make sense to you, leave a comment... oh wait, ha ha (just kidding), just email us at fabulesslyfrugal {at} gmail {dot} com and we'll do our best to help you out!

If this DID make sense to you and you are all set up, then....

LEAVE A COMMENT! :)

ps - The tip was that at Albertsons on Orchard and Overland they have the Hannah Montana toothpaste clearanced at $.99. Double the $.50/1 toothpaste coupon (I'm not sure which brand, can you help me Caitlin?) and you'd get it free!

Coupon Tip Tuesday: Fabulous Coupon Database!

One of our favorite tools when we are doing coupon match-ups it the HCW database!

It. Is. Awesome.

I learned about it from a fellow couponer back in January. (Thanks Jessica!)

It is a little intimidating at first, so we thought we would do a tutorial to make it much easier for you to use.

I LOVE all the different (and FAB) options for searching!

You can search by.......
  • Keyword: Kraft, Milk, Keebler
  • Value: $1/1, .50, $1/2, ext....
  • Type of Coupon: Printable, Blinkie, Tear Pad, Insert, ext....
  • Store: Target, Albertsons, Walgreens, ext....
  • Category: Breakfast, Baking, Cleaning, Dairy ext...

Let's say you are looking for some more coupons for frosting.

1. Type frosting into the description/keyword box. (Your results will begin generating as you type.)

2. The results will list all of the different options for frosting coupons.
(click on the image to see detail)

3. Let's say you want a printable coupon for frosting.

-Click the drop down menu under source

-Scroll down and select printable
and...

voilà! Now you'll ONLY see the printable frosting coupons!

Even sweeter, the results are DIRECT LINKS to the coupons, so you simply click on the description and you will then be able to print the coupon!

Keep in mind, this is a national database and some insert coupons vary by region.

I have mentioned this before, but when I want to be sure a coupon came in the inserts in my area, I go to PYP!

I cross reference in their coupon list for my state!

NOW THAT IS FAB!!

About to Expire

When we teach our classes we tell our FABULOUS Frugal friends that we do not use every coupon. Just because we have a coupon does not mean we go buy a product. We hold on to our coupons until a good sale comes along and then you maximize our savings!
So what do we do if a good sale never somes along and our coupons are about to expire? If we really want a product that we have a coupon for we do one of two things.

1. Go to Winco or a store who's regular prices are less than our frequently shopped Albertsons and use the coupon there.
2. Or we would use a doubler at Albertsons to get closer to regular price at another store.
PS If you haven't noticed Albertsons prices are inflated. We never buy anything there at regular price!

So here is your list of coupons that are about to expire.
I have bolded the ones that I am going to try to use before Friday!
