The lunchbox of a Fab FruGAL's child

I had that exact lunchbox in elementary school. Jealous aren't you? Do you know what is amazing about the contents of that lunchbox? My mom paid more to pack my lunch 20 years ago (cough, cough) than I do today!

Here is what I put in my daughter's lunchbox:

1 Smuckers Uncrustable: $.20  (Doubled the $1/1 from coupons.com-which I don't see anymore- and paid $.79/4 sandwiches)

1 Danimals Coolision tube: FREE  (You can still get this deal! Go HERE to find out how)

1 Quaker granola bar: $.01 (Remember that fabulous Quaker sale where we scored granola bars for $.10/box!)

1 pack of Betty Crocker fruit snacks: $.01 (This deal is HOT. Go HERE for all the details)

1 Tree Top juice box: FREE (Coupons for these are always popping up, and when they do you can score free juice boxes with doublers!)

Total cost of her lunch box contents: $.22 cents!!

And that is why we coupon my fabulous friends!

I don't mean to be insensitive here, but it seems like even tho you are saving more money, the items that you are choosing are all high in sugar/processed ingredients. How do you compensate for that?
I don't remember having that much sugar in my lunch box as a kid.

Liz,
No offense taken. This is one of those extreme post situations to point out the potential savings. This is not what my daughter's lunch consists of daily. We are pretty adamant about whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetable consumption in our house, but I do allow a mixture of processed foods too. Balance is key!

Oh and one more thing I discovered the other day when I bought the uncrustables (which my kids have never had before because I always thought a frozen sandwich was silly, but I'll check them out for $.79!), they have new crustables using whole grain bread and less sugar. I'm sure they are still loaded in sugar, but I thought it was a step in the right direction!

Amber-

I can not believe you did not put a NKOTB lunch box on this post. What were you thinking?

Thats awesome! I was thinking that the other day too because my husband commented that isn't it cheaper for her to eat at school? I said no most the stuff I get are freee or sooo cheap. I put most the stuff in there except usually a sandwhich of course with ingredients that I got on sale. :)Like cheap mayo, cheese, lunchmeat or pb &j.

Thanks, Amber, for the clarification. When I woke up this morning, the idea that you were just using an example popped in my head and I was feeling silly for posting a comment. As moms, I think we all struggle to find a balance between healthy and affordable. Now, if only my daughter wouldn't be so picky! lol

and cool on the uncrustables thing. Unfortunately, I seem to be the only one in the household that enjoys them, so I've only purchased them once.

I am new to all of this couponing thing/lingo...what is NKOTB? and YMMV? Now, I really feel silly. :)

NKOTB is "New Kids on the Block" Only the BEST boy band ever! haha :)

Crazy Chaos,

First, thanks for answering Liz! And Liz, she is right. NKOTB IS the best boy band ever. Let the judging commence!

On a side note Crazy Chaos, I realize we have never met but I have a strong feeling we would be besties if we did. If you want a good giggle, go read this post from my personal blog: http://abercrombiefamily.blogspot.com/2008/11/ill-be-loving-you-forever.html

I'll have to check you out!!! I mainly lurk... :) We live in northern Idaho and my husband is actually a Grocery Manager at Albertsons up here. Our ads are slightly different once in a while but for the most part the sales are the same. :)
