Oatmeal Meat Loaf

1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1 cup tomato juice
3/4 cup oats, uncooked (quick or old-fashioned)
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Sauce

1 cup ketchup
3-4 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp ground mustard

Directions
Heat oven to 350°F. Combine first seven ingredients. Press into an 8x4-inch loaf pan. Mix ingredients for sauce. Top of meatloaf with sauce. Bake for 1 hour or until meat is no longer pink and juices run clear.
Drain and let stand 5 minutes before serving. I usually like to double the sauce and save some for the side. Also great to top with Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce if you have that in your stockpile. Also tastes great to add 1 pkg of Lipton Soup mix to the meat if you have that in your stockpile like I do.

Even if you don't have that combination of coupons, you can still great a great price on granola bars.

It's Tax Time!

So ya ready to start your taxes?
{I love doing them quite frankly. No really. I do!}

This is what I've been using the past few years... (and I love it!)

TurboTax - Do your taxes for Free

Federal is FREE. You have the option to upgrade to the "Deluxe Version", but you don't pay until you file! This is after you see how much you're getting in return (or, if you're unlucky, how much you have to pay). Did that make sense? You don't pay a PENNY until you actually file. And that is only if you do the upgrade and/or state!

I love it because it is easy to use. It guides you through the entire process step by step. And if you have questions, there are help forums. You don't even have to open a new screen to find the answer to your question! Super easy. Love it. Taxes here I come!!!

Fabulessly Frugal Friday: Preventing a High Dental Bill Part 2

Last week I showed you how keeping up on preventative care in the dental office will save you money in the long run. Oh ya and help your teeth and body stay healthy.

Here are some more ideas to cut your dental costs.

Free Dental Days: Give kids a Smile. Every year on the first Friday in February, thousands of our nation's dentists and their dental team members provide free dental care services to uninsured children Kindergarten to 8th grade. The program is called Give Kids a Smile. It is happening Feb 5, 2010. Find a program in your area.

Dental Care by Students: When I was in Dental Hygiene school we did dental cleanings, x-rays and exams all for only $20. It took more time, but the patients got a very thorough cleaning and exam.
If there is a dental school or dental hygiene school in your area contact them. They are always looking for patients, and their fees are minimal and sometimes FREE.
The ISU Dental School in Boise offers care on a sliding scale based on family income.
Apollo College in Boise offer cleanings call 208-377-8080.

Home care: You can do a lot at home to prevent dental decay and the need for expensive dental fillings, crowns and root canals.

  • Floss Daily :)
Flossing prevents gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease). Most people have gingivitis, because most people do not floss everyday. Gasp. Plaque builds up every 12 hours and gets beneath the gum line. Plaque is filled with bacteria that break down the gingival fibers around the tooth. If a person does not floss and does not get professional dental cleaning this disease gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when the bacteria from plaque start to destroy the bone around your teeth. Guess what if you lose enough bone you lose your teeth. Yuk. Remember treating periodontitis costs more than $700 for initial therapy

Flossing also prevents dental decay (cavities). Flossing is the only way to clean between the teeth. Toothbrush bristles just can't get in there.

  • Brush 2 times a day
Be sure to use a soft or extra soft toothbrush to help prevent recession. No not economic recession, gingival recession. The gum starts to pull back away from the tooth exposing the root. This is often caused by brushing too hard.

Brushing will keep the plaque off the teeth and help prevent dental decay and gingivitis.

Fluoride: Fluoride makes the enamel hard and strong to help prevent cavities.
Fluoride can be found in water and some foods; bottled water, city water and well water. Sometimes well water does not have it so have your water tested. Not all city's fluoridate their water, contact your water company to find out. If you do not have enough fluoride in your water your children should take fluoride supplements. Children and adults can rinse with fluoride rinse like ACT found in the store. High risk people should brush with a prescription strength fluoride.

Cash Discount: Many dental offices will offer a 10% discount to patients the pay in full for their services. I know a good one that does. :) Always be sure to ask if these services are available.

Sealant Clinics: Sealants are a protective coating placed in deep grooves of permanent teeth to prevent food and plaque from getting trapped and causing cavities. Sometimes free sealants are offered in the schools. Be sure to take advantage of these programs for your children.

Fluoride in the School: Any time your child can get a topical fluoride treatment in school get them involved. This is also usually FREE. This will help prevent cavities.

Eat Healthy: Just because you have a pantry full of fruit snacks you got for .05 a box does not mean you should let your kids eat them as much as they please. Hehe we had to work on this at my house. Sugar is a huge factor in causing tooth decay. Having a good balanced diet and taking vitamin supplements (especially D, B, C, Calcium, magnesium and zinc) will help supply your teeth and gums with the nutrients they need to stay healthy.

Avoid pop/soda: Not only does it contain lots of sugar it also has ACID! So that diet you thought you were safe with is still doing damage to your teeth. Acid and sugar work hard to cause cavities in the teeth.

Avoid or Stop Using Tobacco: Tobacco causes periodontal disease and can even cause ORAL CANCER.

Next week we will cover how you can save money with dental insurance and dental discount plans.

This is Why We Coupon!

Our friend Ali has been doing a great series called Price Check. She goes to the dreaded Walfart Walmart and checks their prices then compares them to the coupon shoppers price.

If you have ever taken our class you know that we tell you where to get all your coupons and then we tell you not to just go to the store and use them!!!!! No, we tell you to hold on the them, wait for a GOOD sale and then BAM you will get a HOT DEAL. Well it does not work that way every time, but most of the time it does! :)

Ali covered several items this week, but the one I am going to highlight is DIAPERS! Bet you thought I was going to say Quaker. We have been just a little excited about that.

I wonder with all the Quaker excitement if some of us forgot about the diapers deals this week?

Target: Pampers or Huggies for $5.32 Jumbo pack
You can still do this until Saturday 1/30 find out how here.

Walgreens: Huggies for $4.32
You can still do this until Saturday 1/30 find out how here.
Locals find out or share which stores are stocked here.

Walmart: Huggies on roll back for $8.97, normally $9.97

Walmart: Parents Choice $6.67

I love that Ali compared the no-name brand too. I used to buy generic thinking that was the best way to save, now I know better. :)

So you see, using coupons and waiting for sales beats Walmart. If you would have printed a coupon and taken it to Walmart this week you would have paid $6.97 for Huggies.

To see more price comparisons check out Ali's Coupon Adventures.

More Deals to Be Had

With the Quaker sale going on this week, it is easy to forget about some other deals that are at some other stores.  Here are a few found by our Fabulous reader Cathyb.

Winco (at least Meridian, not sure about other stores): The deli counter has their honey ham and smoked turkey breast both for $1.98 a pound right now. You can have them slice it to the thickness you desire and package it into the sizes that you will use. I like to buy multiple packages in the size my family uses in a week and put them in the freezer.

Fred Meyer: With all the current catalinas, you can roll several catalinas this week to maximize savings:

I based this scenario on having one computer and having participated in the Kraft catalina on Sunday and still having a $5 catalina to start with. If you don't have this one then you will have to decide if the savings are good enough to do the rest of the scenario. If you have access to more computers you may be able to roll each transaction more than once.

#1 - Buy 4 Grands Biscuits (2 for $3) = 6.00
2 Pillsbury Cresent rolls ($1.73) = 3.46
Tax = 0.57
Total = 10.03

Use: (2) $1/2 Grands Biscuits here = - $2
(1) $1/2 Pillsbury Cresent rolls here = - $1
$5 catalina from Kraft promo = - 5
Total = -8.00

OOP = $2.03
Get back a $4 catalina

 Remember the Ziplock deal we told you about?
#2 - Buy 4 boxes of Ziplock bags ($1.99 for 50 sandwich bags) = 7.96
Tax = 0.48
Total = 8.44

Use (2) $1.50/2 Ziplock product here = - 3
$4 catalina from Pillsbury = - 4
Total = - 7.00

OOP = $1.44
Get back a $2 catalina
Submit for $5 rebate here

To Wait or Not to Wait?

We have CONFIRMED ALBERTSONS DOUBLE COUPONS for Sunday

So Now What?

Our reader CathyB shares her thoughts on the subject:

Quaker sale: to buy now or wait for doubles

I was in a bit of a quandary about whether to wait to buy my Quaker products after Sunday with doubles and get some free products (but possibly have the shelves be empty) or whether to buy now, early in the sale, to ensure that I am able to get the products I want at still a great price. Here is what I have decided:

1) I will go ahead and use any coupons that I would not be able to double, either because they are over $1 (like the $3/5 coupon) or because the product is already free or close without doubling. If I had any coupons that were going to expire soon, then I would go ahead and use those too. I would also go ahead and buy anything I particularly wanted that I did not have a coupon for.

2) I will wait for those products that I have coupons that can be doubled AND have at least 2 weeks before they expire. My thinking is that in the best case some product will be available to double after Sunday, and in the worst case scenario I will have to get a rain check for those items and buy them a week later with my coupons for the same price that I would have paid if I bought them today.

Hopefully this could help some people decide whether to buy now or wait. Also it helped me not to panic too much about if they run out of product for this sale - rain checks are a wonderful thing!

Thanks Cathyb
