Fab Family Fun: Make Your Own Instruments!

Today we're literally making music by making our own instruments!

Maracas

Put some rice or dry beans in a paper or plastic cup and place another cup on top of it. Bind them together by taping a complete circle where the cups meet. That's it, then let the kids shake them all around!

Drums

Use empty oatmeal canisters or similar containers (the one on the left was for Tang) to make drums. They will make a hollow drum sound when you hit the lid.

You can also make your own covers! Just make designs or color on a regular sheet of paper and tape or glue it to the canister.

Cymbals

To make cymbals, get two pie tins and tape strips of cardboard on the back of them for handles. It's so easy, and this was by far my kids' favorite. We had a major camera crisis, so I had to re-take the photo after they had played with them all afternoon but you can see that they got a little "beat" up!

The greatest part about making these instruments (you know, other than quality time with the little ones) was that I didn't have to go out and buy anything we used to make them!
