CHEAP Kellogg's Cereal at Albertsons

I went to Albertsons today because I wanted to see exactly what cereals are included in the Kellogg's sale that we told you about on Tuesday. More importantly, I wanted to know if the cereals in the catalina deal were included in the sale!

Good news fab friends,
they ARE!!

For all you newbies out there, this is how it works. You'll want to understand what a catalina is (not the salad dressing), and what doubles are, and how to print a coupon!

SCENARIOS:

PURCHASE: any (4) Kellogg's Cereal pictured above $1.88 each
{Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Corn Pops, Cocoa Krispies, Honey Smacks, Apple Jacks}
USE: (2) $1.50/2 from {coupons.com} click to print!
PAY: $4.52
RECEIVE: $3 catalina coupon to use on your next transaction

PURCHASE: any (6) Kellogg's Cereal pictured above
USE: (2) $1.00/3 ANY10 oz or larger Kellogg's Cereals (print it twice!)
USE: (2) Albertsons Doublers
USE: $3.00 catalina you just received
PAY: =$4.28
RECEIVE $4.00 Catalina (because you purchased 5 or more)

And if you enough coupons, you can do it again!!

PURCHASE: any (6) Kellogg's Cereal pictured above
USE: $1.00/3 any Kellogg's Cereal from 2/7 RP (sorry Idaho, we didn't get it, you can find them on eBay)
USE: (2) Albertsons Doublers
USE: $4.00 catalina you just received

PAY: $3.28 for 6 boxes of cereal {or $.55 each - plus tax}
RECEIVE $4.00 Catalina (because you purchased 5 or more)

Here are the final #'s:

16 boxes of Kellogg's Cereal for $12.08 (plus tax)
$4 catalina (aka: Albertsons Cash) in your pocket
Like Spending $8.08 for 16 boxes of cereal (if you factor in the catalina)...
$.51 per box!
That is my personal price point for cereal!

Now that you've done your three transactions, you're done (for the time being). You'll want to come back and use the $4.00 "Albertsons Cash" (expires in 10-14 days), and there are many more wonderful deals to be had! You can find them in these posts:

Several Great Doubles Deals! (Including cheap yogurt, cans of tuna for $.10 each, cheap toilet paper, and more!)

I just wanted to add that for those of us who do this on a smaller scale, it's worth it to do the math on the scenarios individually to figure out the best deal. 16 boxes of cereal (or even 10) is way too much my very small amount of storage space. But at this price I would by 4 or possibly 6 boxes, which would be an ample stockpile for my small family.

Bottom line after factoring in the catalina, the first scenario on the cereal (buy 4 and use 2 $1.50/2 coupons with no doubler) is a better deal than the second scenario (buy 6 and use 2 $1/2 coupons doubled). The first scenario ends up at $.38/box whereas the second scenario ends up at $.54/box.

I made this mistake yesterday on the Del Monte veggies deal. Sales price was $1/ea, I had a coupon for $1/4, doubled for $2/4. It seemed like a better deal to buy 6 cans and get a $2 catalina, as opposed to buying only 4 cans and getting a $1 catalina. However, buying 6 cans ended in a net price (after catalina) of 3/$1, whereas had I only bought 4 cans, the net price would have been 4/$1. It's counter-intuitive, but sometimes, fewer is cheaper.

You may have made this point somewhere on your fabulous blog, but I'm a newbie here and don't recall having read it, so I thought I'd mention it for the benefit of other newbies or those without the need for such large quantities. Thanks again for all the work you do to maintain this blog. It's a wonderful resource and my favorite home-on-the-web for couponing information.

At a Meridian Albertsons yesterday, I saw a shelf tag for a $.75 catalina on Uncle Ben's rice wyb 2 boxes. It was only marked on the bigger boxes, which weren't on sale and I didn't have a coupon for, so not a good deal for the catalina alone. But if it applies to the smaller packages or combined with a coupon, it might make a good deal. I didn't remember to make a note of the dates that it will be running, sorry.

Is there a place where you can go to find the specific details of a catalina deal? I'd be interested to know if the smaller packages generate a catalina, or if there are other catalina values for larger quantities. If I bought one small package of, say, the Ready Rice, would it trigger a catalina alert at checkout where I could get more details about the promotion?

I'm trying to get a handle on catalina deals.

One more question from this newbie ...

Is there a specific place on your blog to mention things like this Uncle Ben's catalina deal?

It isn't relevant to the cereal post, so I probably shouldn't have posted in right here. Should I have gone back to the older posts where you listed the current Albertsons catalina deals and posted it there? What is your preference in this area?

I'm glad to contribute information in return for all the great info I've picked up here, and want to do it correctly. Thanks.

Hi! Thanks for the scenarios! I went to the one on cherry lane and they said they had no record of a Catalina for Kelloggs cereal??? I bought frosted mini wheats which is 1.88, would that have thrown it off?

I WOULD DO THE FOLLOWING CEREAL DEAL THIS WAY:

2 BOXES USING 1.50 COUPON
3 BOXES USING 1.00 COUPON (DOUBLED)
PAY 5.90 GET $4 BACK CAT

2 BOXES USING 1.50 COUPON
3 BOXES USING 1.00 COUPON (DOUBLED)
PAY 1.90 (USING CAT) GET $4 BACK

WHICH YOU CAN THEN USE ON THE NEXT TRANSACTION TO PURCHASE 6 BOXES OF CEREAL
TOTAL 3.28 GET $4 CAT BACK

TOTAL 11.08 OUT OF POCKET AND 4 CAT BACK

GAOYOUMOM: I BOUGHT 8 CANS OF VEGGIES USED 2 1.00 OF CANS (DOUBLED)
8.00-4.00 (COUPONS DOUBLED) RECEIVED 2 DOLLAR CAT=LIKE PAYING .25 A CAN

Susan-

Let me see if I can answer all your questions.

First- Cereal deal: Thanks for your input! You are right about the buying four boxes that is how I posted it here.

Kellogg's Scenario:

Frosted Flakes 12-20 oz $1.88
{Buy 4}
Use (2) $1.50/2 catalina coupon to use on next order
$1.52 or .38 a box

In order to use the $1/3 coupon you have to buy in multiples of 3 or 6.

buy 3 = $5.64
double $1/3 save $2
Get $1 catalina
Final: $2.64 or .88 a box

buy 6 = 11.28
double (2) $1/3 save $4
Get $3 catalina
Final : $4.28 or .71 a box

hmm I see that you are referring to a $1/2 coupon. I do not see a $1/2 coupon. Also if you were using a $1/2 and buying 6 you would want to use (3) not 2. That would change the scenario. Am I missing something?

buy 6 = 11.28
double (3) $1/2 save $6
Get $3 catalina
Final : $2.28 or .38 a box

If you know where a $1/2 coupon is LET US KNOW!!!!!! That deal would be FAB!

You bring a GREAT POINT though. Sometimes Less is more. or buying less is a better deal! It is important to work out different scenario's for buying in different quantities if you are trying to pinch every penny. Thanks for your fabulous input. Part of being good at saving money is being good and buying only what you will use. Money spent on things you do not use is WASTED!

Blogger would not let me leave such a long comment so here is the other half. hehehe

Second- Rice CATALINA:
Thanks for bringing that to our attention. We will have to keep on eye out at the store to see the dates on that. To know that size you will have to look at the tag you saw. If it does not specify you will need to check and see which size product they have it in front of. If none of that works maybe a nice checker will test it for you at customer service or when they are not busy.

There is not catalina database. We find out from each other. Looking for shelf tags, reading the catalina print outs at the store that give you a heads up. Here is a little more info on catalinas.

Posting catalina info on the catalina post is MOST helpful for other readers. We see ALL the comments, but a reader looking for catalina info would likely read the catalina comments to get more info and would miss it on the kelloggs post.

We are certainly not mad if you post it somewhere else. We are excited that you are contributing and sending some coupon love! It would be good to try to match things up though. :) Thanks for considering that. Very thoughtful of you. ~Monica

Brenda-
Buying the mini wheats certainly would have thrown things off for you. They are NOT part of the catalina deal.

Here are the cereals that are:

Kellogg's Cereals
Feb 10 - March 10
Frosted Flakes (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Apple Jacks (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Fruit Loops (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Corn Pops (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Cocoa Krispies (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Honey Smacks (10oz or larger, any flavor)
Buy (3) & get $1 OYNO
Buy (4) & get $3 OYNO
Buy (5) or more & get $4 OYNO

I got some 1.00/2 coupons for Kellogs (the kind that go with the catalina) on Ebay. They expire on 3/6/10. I haven't gotten them yet but they are supposed to say "do not double" on them so it wouldn't work to double those. I am going to combine them with the 1.00/3 coupons and buy in quantities of 5 at a time. It turns out to be a little cheaper that way and not as many doublers used. Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the great feedback on my questions. My head is spinning with all of this.

I have no idea where $1/2 cereal coupons came from. I had two of them that I picked up somewhere, but I'm not organized enough to know where I got it. I'd tell you if I could. :-)

I was able to double them, but whether they said "do not double" I don't know ... the cashier was slamming through the coupons pretty quickly and not paying much attention. So they might have been the same ones described in the previous comment here, or maybe not. I'm not much help, am I?

Thanks a bunch for the cereal deal. I managed to get a bunch of Frosted Flakes for a great price!

Catalina - I wanted to add that I got a $1 catalina when I bought 4 jars of Prego sauce (on sale for $1.99 each). This is the only type my husband likes so I splurge on them.

Mere Mortal-

Cool name. Glad you scored on the cereal. Woot!

Thanks for the catalina info. We LOVE prego too. Now we will just have to find out what prints when you buy 5 or 6. Also if you LOVE Prego you may want to stock up. Buy coupons on ebay and with doublers you may have yourself a pretty sweet deal. We will look into it. We love PREGO! Last year when we did this we were buying it for .50 a jar.

Found $1/1 (dnd) Kellogg's peelies at Albertsons today -- buy 5 @ $1.88, use five $1/1 = $4.40, get $4 cat!! .08 a box! Roll, roll, roll baby!!

Fabulessly Frugal said...

Ann-

Sweet find! What store did you shop?

Ann said...

West Linn, Oregon -- I didn't see peelies on the cereal boxes in the aisle, but they have a big display at the back of the store (sort of a mountain of cereal), and lots and lots of those boxes had the peelies. I went back for a second run and rolled the cat, and my checker added in a .40 double, which brought my total to zero for five boxes!

I don't think he should have added the .40 doubler though .. the coupons say DND, as does the catalina (but that's whole other issue -- whether they can "twice the value" of a DND... :) I smiled and took it gratefully!)
