TurboTax Federal Free Edition is really easy to use, with easy step by step directions that help you get your maximum refund. You can prepare, print and e-file all for FREE.

We did turbo tax free edition last year. The catch is the federal is free, state is not.

This is copied directly from this website http://turbotax.intuit.com/ on the left, under free edition, there's a link for "state additional" in the "FREE Federal
Free efile included
State additional"
How much does TurboTax Online State cost?

TurboTax State with Free Edition: Only $27.95 per state

If you think that's expensive as I did, I compared with H&R Block, the other most popular one around check here
http://www.hrblock.com/taxes/products/online/popups/state_fees.html
and it says "H&R Block At Home Free

* state — $29.95 for each state return filed"

I started our taxes yesterday. I am going to save the 2 bucks and go with Turbo Tax. I suppose you might be able to do the program and have it figure up all the numbers for you and then mail it in for free. You could avoid the charge that way. We did that one year with federal, because we needed a form that couldn't be submitted online. (My employer didn't give us W-2's but that is a whole other story.)

Also check your state's treasury website, as many will let you file online for free. We've done the Free HR block for several years now and just do the state separately from the state treasury website.

if you check out www.irs.gov, there are a lot of 'free' tax prep sites (if you qualify, typically have to make 57k or less, be over age 19, etc.), however the state usually does cost a fee... a couple sites i have found that are pretty inexpensive are 'freetaxusa dot com' and 'taxactonline dot com' If I remember correctly, These are only 9.95 and 14.95, respectively, to file state. I LOVE Tax season!! :))
