Let Them Eat Dirt!

photo is from allrecipes.com
Have you ever made Dirt Cups? I am in charge of the Halloween Party for my Preschool Co-op so I’m going to make them for the kids. I know Halloween isn’t for awhile, but I need to buy some of the items now while they're a good deal!

Recipe:
2 cups cold milk
1 4-serving size (small) package instant chocolate pudding
8 oz. frozen whipped topping (such as Cool Whip), thawed
1-1/2 cups crushed oreos
Gummy Worms (I’m also using gummy bugs)

1. Whisk together milk and instant pudding for two minutes, until pudding is completely dissolved and let stand 5 minutes to thicken.
2. Stir in frozen whipped topping and 1/2 cup of the crushed cookies.
3. Spoon into cups.
4. Sprinkle remaining crushed cookies over the pudding mixture. Top with gummy candies.
5. Chill until ready to serve.

Sales/Coupons for this recipe:

Albertsons
Oreos to Go $1.00
Use the $.75/2 Nabisco Cookies or Crackers coupon from 8/23 SS
Double It
Final Price: $.25 each wyb 2

Wonka Gummy Candies $1.59

Final Price: $.59

If you want my version of the recipe, it’s even simpler. I just put pudding in the cups, crushed oreos on top, and worms and bugs on top of the oreos. I never actually knew you were supposed to add cool whip and oreo chunks to the pudding until I looked it up for this post! It’s yummy either way! You can also make Halloween cupcakes with the same idea. Make and frost your cupcakes, and then dip them into crushed oreos and put gummy worms on top of that.

So I used to make dirt cups like that, then I found this post on Pioneer Woman and I have never gone back. WAY less frugal, but if you are having something less along the lines of a kids Halloween bash and more along the lines of a fancy shmansy party, try these: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2008/04/springy-flower-pot-desserts-a-blast-from-my-past/.

But for the record, I'm with Cathy salivating over here too!
