Lower That Phone Bill!

MagicJack

My little sister is a newlywed and a college student. She is always looking for ways to save money. She told me about this cool way to save on your phone bill.
The Magic Jack is a little device that you simply hook up to your computer USB and your phone cord. It is only $39.95 for the first year. That includes the device and the service. Then you pay $19.95 a year after that. (You do have to have an internet connection other than dial-up) That is less than $2 a month and it includes long distance, directory assistance, call waiting, 3-way calling, voice mail, CALLER ID and lots of other services that other companies charge extra for. My sister has called me using her Magic Jack and I did not even know. It was totally clear and normal.
I checked out their website and found out they are offering the first month FREE! So you can try them out make sure the service is good and it will not cost you anything. This is so awesome. I am always looking for ways to cut our monthly bills and I have tried a couple of VoIP services. I am going to switch now. Only $19.95/year that totally kills the $30/month I am paying to Vonage right now. Sign me up!

I was very excited when I found Magic Jack too, but didn't have good luck with it at all. It took several hours with tech support to get it loaded properly, then we found that the phone quality was not good. It was almost impossible to understand the person at the other end. The good news is that after a week, we returned it and received a refund- less what it cost to send it back. Not too bad, but not a good experience. Too bad... I was excited to have a $20 year phone bill!

Jenny- That is a bummer. I read some mixed reviews on it, but it seemed that most were positive and it would be worth a shot. Like I said, it has worked great for my sister. Maybe it depends on the type of internet connection you have too.

My husband purchased this about 2 months ago and has no complaints. The only disappointing this is that the caller id is only the persons number, not their name. We had trouble with the line when it was first set up, but my husband called and they just changed the phone number and set it up on that number and we haven't had any other problems!

I prefer the OOMA! You only pay a price up front (a little pricey at first - $200, but considering you don't have any more fees, I think it's wonderful! It's already paid for itself!) and then it's free after that! No monthly/yearly payments. My husband and I have been using it since OCT. 2008 and we love it. It's VOIP, so you need good a internet connection. It has caller id (name and number), an answering machine, 2 lines, free long distance anywhere in the US, cheap international calls (for pennies!), etc. Check it out! http://www.ooma.com/
